Idea 3W is an initiative of the Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK), which aims to support the world of science and business in the development of modern technologies, among others. In industry, energy and medicine. Early November 2023 saw the launch of the 3W platform, a tool that enables effective support for the development of technologies in the areas of water, hydrogen and elemental carbon and facilitates cooperation between developers of innovative projects and scientists and companies interested in commercializing inventions.
Idea 3W
The 3W Idea is a globally unique concept in which we combine the competencies and needs of science, business and government to build a better, modern, sustainable future based on technologies in the areas of water, hydrogen and elemental carbon. The idea is a response to the challenges facing society as a whole in the 21st century. These include. Energy transition or safe access to drinking water.
We see great potential in the cooperation and synergy of our partners’ activities. The 3W idea builds bridges that connect different circles – science, business, administration – in order to jointly strengthen the competitiveness of Polish companies and help them more effectively use these strategic resources of the future. said Maciej Przybyla, managing director of the strategy division at Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego.
Experience shows that cooperation is the best way to achieve the desired results. Even the best invention won’t change the world if it lacks an investor and a company willing to commercialize it. On the other hand, even a large investment and marketing campaign will not enable people to use the technology if unfavorable regulations stand in the way. We need cooperation in all these fields to successfully implement innovations that will make our lives easier and greener.
Three resources of the future
Water, hydrogen and coal are key resources that, if used properly, can strengthen Poland’s position in the global market. The limited amount of potable water available in our country forces us to work toward a closed-loop economy. To develop new technologies, we need to take care of water retention and treatment systems. At the same time, it is modern inventions that help create water-saving projects both in our homes and in industry.
Hydrogen is being touted today as the fuel of the future. Climate change shows us that we need to develop emission-free methods of energy production. Polish companies, with the right support, can become leaders in green hydrogen production. The possibility of using it to power cars, buses and trains is now virtually at hand.
The last W is carbon, an element that is found in all living organisms. It is about modern coal technologies, not coal understood as a fossil fuel. As an element, carbon comes in many forms, which have different and very valuable properties. Thanks to new inventions, it is making a comeback in completely different applications. Graphene, fullerenes, carbon nanotubes or activated carbon carry enormous potential. They allow the creation of lighter and more durable engineering materials, enabling their use in many industries: electronics, medicine, construction, aerospace, aviation and automotive.
3W world – development and mission
In two years, more than 200 partners have joined the 3W world, including. Toyota Central Europe, Veolia or Orange Poland. All are united by a commitment to the development of water, hydrogen and coal technologies and a concern for the sustainable use of at least one of these three resources.
From the beginning, we knew that cooperation and bringing communities together was the key to success. That’s why we undertook to build a 3W ecosystem that we can proudly say works. It integrates a community of more than 200 entities and creates a platform for cooperation between different communities: business, science and local governments. We could see an example of how it works during the 3W Congress, which took place on November 27-28 in Warsaw – it brought together 1,500 experts connected with the 3W sector, who see it as an opportunity for the Polish economy and future generations – says Magdalena Sopiela, director of the 3W Promotion and Community Development Office at the Land Bank.
Scientists play an important role in the 3W ecosystem. Poland has enormous intellectual potential, and business needs new technologies and innovation. The 3W idea has created conditions to integrate these two key communities: scientists and entrepreneurs. In 2022, together with 11 leading Polish technical colleges and universities and the Lukasiewicz Research Network, it established the 3W Interdisciplinary Innovation Center, which today already brings together 40 entities.
ICI 3W’s mission is to strengthen cooperation between the business world and the university and research community in such areas as. creating study and training programs related to the 3W, and providing multi-faceted support in commercialization and obtaining financing for scientific projects in the 3W sector, with a focus on common areas. In addition, the center is piloting projects related to the areas of water, hydrogen and coal, ensuring that they are efficient and in line with the 3W idea. It analyzes the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) and offers legal consultation and support in the process of obtaining patents.
The mission of the 3W idea is also to build public awareness of environmental issues and the importance of everyday choices. Therefore, 3W works in multiple ways, including. organizes workshops in schools or competitions for students. He also creates educational films and animations that tell m. in. about what human life will be like in a dozen years or so, if 3W resources are used skillfully.
3W Internet Platform
November 2023. premiered the 3W platform, an online space that connects business, science and the public sector in a real way. The 3W platform is a center of competence, a place to share knowledge and experience, both for these beginners and leaders in the 3W industry. The platform opens up entirely new opportunities for collaboration, implementation and commercialization of ambitious projects in cutting-edge technological and business formats with useful and effective support from the scientific world.
A representative of Idea 3W, Olga Zalewska, talks about the tool this way: The 3W social platform is a place to exchange ideas, competencies and contacts. This is our virtual city where you can meet companies and people who are looking for business or scientific partnerships, but also for collaborators, verification of their ideas or funding for their projects. It is worth becoming a resident of this city to gain knowledge and use the potential of three resources – water, hydrogen and carbon nanotechnology.
A user who registers on the 3W platform receives constant access to the latest reports, industry analysis, up-to-date information on available funding and specialized articles or expertise from the 3W Interdisciplinary Innovation Center. The platform is also an opportunity to connect and establish partnerships with industry leaders, researchers and institutional representatives.
A special announcements section allows users to post information about solutions needed or offered, colleagues sought or internships for students.
An animation was created for users to introduce the principles of the platform. To be viewed on the YouTube platform.
3W sector in Poland
Water, hydrogen and elemental carbon are raw materials that will play a major role in the near future. They will improve our quality of life, help take care of our health and the environment in which we live. But that’s not all. The material value of the 3W sector in Poland is valued at $4.86 billion. At the same time, by 2030. That figure is expected to rise to $5.6 billion. The 3W platform is designed to help Polish companies tap this potential to increase the competitiveness of our economy. Will she succeed in doing so? It seems to be on the right track.
