Traffic jams? A frantic search for accommodation? Crowds of tourists? Such conditions are not conducive to relaxation. More and more people, instead of long trips, are choosing microtravel: short getaways to explore nearby areas, often in nature. During a warm May weekend, beaches by the river will be an enticing option.
Urban beaches: in the center of the action
Beaches located along riverbanks in large cities combine natural value with a rich cultural and entertainment offer. A good example is Poniatówka Beach by the Boulevards in Warsaw, where you can relax on deckchairs or directly on the soft, fine Vistula sand, with the National Stadium in the background. It is the largest and most popular urban beach in Warsaw, where open-air events are often held in the evenings.
In Poznań, residents and tourists can enjoy several beaches along the Warta River. They are located in the northern part of the city (Szeląg), near the Old Market Square (Chwaliszewo), in the south (Wilda), and on the right bank of the river (Rataje). Each has a different character. In Szeląg, you can relax close to nature, in peace and among trees. Chwaliszewo Beach is a proposition for active visitors – there are beach volleyball courts and the Kontener Art venue, offering food and space for concerts. The Wilda and Rataje beaches, in turn, are areas designed with families and children in mind.
Those who enjoy relaxing by the river are also catered for in Wrocław, the city of 100 bridges. The most famous riverside beach here is Hot Spot. Beachgoers can enjoy deckchairs, volleyball courts, a food zone, attractions such as Beer Yoga, and around 100 tons of sand.
Wild river beaches? The best places away from civilization
Attractive places to relax by the river outside large cities are harder to find, but they offer closer contact with nature.
Residents of the Mazovia region have access to wild beaches along the Świder River, for example by the narrow-gauge railway bridge near Konstancin-Jeziorna. It is worth remembering that access to the nearby beach in Ciszyca is prohibited – it is located within a nature reserve. Within a drive of no more than 40 minutes from Warsaw, you can also reach a large beach on the Rządza River in Stare Załubice, and a one-hour trip is enough to reach a charming beach on the Liwiec River in Barchów.
In search of interesting riverside beaches, it is also worth heading to the Bug River. Here you will find a municipal beach in Drohiczyn, with full tourist infrastructure, and a more intimate one in Mielnik.
Where to spend a mini holiday by the Vistula? The beach in Kazimierz Dolny is worth recommending, with a charming view of the town, as well as the bathing area in Puławy, which has a more wild, natural character.
In the Pieniny Mountains, you can combine relaxation by the water with active recreation. The rocky beach in Sromowce Niżne is popular among people taking part in rafting trips on the Dunajec River and offers an attractive view of the Trzy Korony massif.
There are also less obvious but worthwhile places along smaller rivers, such as the areas around Borsk and Tleń on the Wda River, Pomiechówek on the Wkra River, or Spała on the Pilica River.
The 10GG campaign: promoting mindful relaxation by the water
During the May weekend, beaches by rivers will likely be crowded, which will not be without impact on the natural environment. Wodne Sprawy encourages people to enjoy nature in a mindful and responsible way and to leave as little trace as possible.
The fourth edition of the educational campaign 10 main sins of the unaware tourist reminds us which behaviors are most harmful to Polish rivers, lakes, and the sea. In the coming holiday weeks, we will discuss each of them, showing that it is possible to relax in a better way – with respect for water resources and the ecosystems that surround them.
