Christmas markets on the water. Christmas magic reflected in the surface of rivers and lakes

jarmarki bożonarodzeniowe

Thousands of lights are reflected in the surface of the Rhine, Danube or Alpine lakes and create a fairy-tale scenery. The chill of the December air mingles with the warmth of mulled wine, the aroma of cinnamon breaks the scent of Christmas trees, and the sound of waves mingles with the sounds of carols – Christmas markets on the waterfront allow you to look at the holidays from a completely different perspective.

European Christmas markets on the waterfront

Christmas market in the German port

Lying on the banks of the Rhine, Cologne turns into a winter wonderland with the Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt am Schokoladenmuseum. At the entrance to the Rheinauhafen harbor, right next to the Chocolate Museum, snow-white pagoda tents with wooden floors are set up, which from a distance resemble the sails of moored ships. Some 70 stalls house food and handicraft stalls, with harbor cranes and modern buildings as a backdrop.

The port atmosphere can be seen in every detail here. Vendors in sailor’s costumes serve fresh fish specialties, warming dishes and snacks inspired by cuisines from different parts of the world, and hot drinks await on a 15-meter wooden tri-mast. The former harbor lighthouse has been transformed into a cozy tavern where you can take refuge from the cold. A visit to the fair is worth ending with an evening cruise on the Rhine – from the decks of the cruise ships you can simultaneously see the illuminated fair, the cathedral and the winter panorama of the riverside boulevards.

Danube River cruises one of the attractions of the Budapest Christmas market

In Budapest, Christmas life takes place primarily in downtown squares. The largest Christmas markets unfold in Vörösmarty Square and the square in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica – Advent Feast at the Basilica. Wooden houses with handicrafts, Hungarian specialties and an ice skating rink at the basilica turn the city center into a lighted town full of scents and bustle. Although the stalls themselves stand a few streets away from the waterfront, the Danube becomes a natural extension of the fairs.

Winter cruises depart from the city’s wharves: from about an hour-long, typically sightseeing cruises in heated ships and an offer of hot drinks, to longer Christmas dinner cruises with live music. On board you can sip mulled wine or non-alcoholic spice infusions while admiring the festively decorated city – the illuminated Parliament, the Royal Castle and the Chain Bridge.

Lakeside fair for those who appreciate a quieter atmosphere

In the heart of Carinthia, on Lake Millstatt, the Christmas market has a quieter, more contemplative feel. Instead of a compact square with stalls, there is the Millstätter Lichtweg, a roughly 2.4-kilometer route that runs partly by the lake itself and partly through the historic center. After dark, the path is marked by light installations and illuminated trees. The trail’s creators focus primarily on silence and quiet enjoyment of the festive mood. Installations illuminate the facades of the abbey and towers, and a 750-year-old linden tree in the monastery courtyard turns into a Feenbaum after dark – a tale of the old days is played from speakers hidden under its branches.

Along the way, there are small outlets selling drinks and holiday baked goods. At the Wunschhafen – a small wishing haven on the shore of the lake – visitors write their dreams on cards, put them in small wooden boats, light a candle and launch them on the water. In the evening, dozens of lights floating on the surface of Millstätter See create a magical sight.

Also, the German section of the Danube River is the setting for festive attractions

Germany is famous for its Christmas markets, and Vilshofen an der Donau shows that they can still surprise. The Schwimmender Christkindlmarkt here takes place on the December weekends of Advent along the Donaupromenade, with the Stadt Linz ship moored at the waterfront at its heart. Some of the stalls selling handicrafts and regional products are located on board, while the rest stretch along the illuminated shore. When in the evening the garlands of lights, the silhouette of the ship and the outlines of the city are reflected in the dark water of the Danube – one has the impression that the Christmas market reigns on the river, not just beside it.

On the promenade grows a 9-meter pyramid with illuminated figures, a stately Christmas tree stands next to it, and an impressive wooden nativity scene can be seen on the ship. The smell of mulled wine, roasted chestnuts and roasted almonds is in the air, and live music builds the atmosphere of a family gathering by the water.

Peschiera del Garda delights with underwater nativity scene

There are many Christmas markets on Lake Garda, but the most unique aquatic tradition can be found in Peschiera del Garda. In the Canale di Mezzo, where the waters of Garda pass into the Mincio River, an underwater nativity scene called Presepe del Lago has been created for years. Life-size metal figures are set at the bottom of the canal, and after dark, lighting brings out the outlines of the Holy Family and shepherds from the dark water, visible from the bridge and waterfront boulevards. On Christmas Eve in the evening, a procession in boats departs from Porta Brescia, and divers from a local club lower a statue of the baby Jesus into an underwater manger under the spotlight.

A winter night, Christmas carols bouncing off the fortress walls and lights twinkling below the surface of the water create one of the most unusual Christmas scenes on the Garda River.

Bydgoszcz fair the only one of its kind in Poland

Poland, too, can boast a water Christmas market. The Bydgoszcz Christmas Fair stretches between the Old Market, Teatralny Square and the Old Town Bridge on the Brda River. It is here, by the river, that some of the food stands are set up. On one side you can see the Mill Island and wharves, on the other – the historic buildings of the center, and in the evening the whole festive town is reflected in the water. This is the only fair in Poland located directly on the river crossing.

For the past three years, the Bydgoszcz Bridge Fair has also been accompanied by the Retro Fair on the Water on the historic Lemara barge, moored at Fish Market. An intimate vintage-style fair is held in the holds – crafts, holiday products, antiques and souvenirs related to Bydgoszcz. For this time, the barge and the accompanying tug Certa are specially illuminated, turning a stretch of the Brda into a small retro port.

Whether one chooses our native Bydgoszcz fair or decides to venture abroad, Christmas gatherings by the water have something about them that cannot be replicated in a city square. The lights reflected in the surface of rivers and lakes, the proximity of wharves, bridges and ships give the familiar December scenario a whole new dimension.
