Elbląg Canal celebrates its 182nd birthday in Miłomłyn. A history that still flows

For nearly two centuries, the Elbląg Canal has remained one of the most remarkable achievements of European hydraulic engineering. It is not only a historic engineering monument but also a living part of the region’s landscape and economy. That is why, on 25 July 2026, Miłomłyn will once again host the Elbląg Canal Birthday celebrations, an event that brings together history, water and modern tourism.

For many years, the Elbląg Canal has been one of the symbols of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. Its system of inclined planes, locks and canals, designed by Georg Jacob Steenke, continues to attract engineers, historians and tourists from around the world. It is an example of hydraulic infrastructure that, despite nearly 180 years of operation, still serves navigation while remaining a valuable engineering monument and an important part of the region’s identity.

Located at the crossroads of the Elbląg Canal’s waterways, Miłomłyn has been developing the idea of celebrating the canal’s birthday for several years. The event commemorates not only the beginning of the canal’s construction in 1844 but also highlights its importance for the economic, tourism and social development of the entire region. The organisers aim to make it one of Poland’s leading events promoting the country’s hydraulic engineering heritage.

History told by the water

The centrepiece of this year’s celebrations will be a spectacular historical re-enactment of the beginning of the Elbląg Canal’s construction. Based on entries from the Miłomłyn town chronicle, the performance will transport visitors back to the mid-19th century. Historical re-enactors in period costumes, a brass band and boats will take part, while the event will begin with a historical parade through the town towards the lock.

The canal’s own infrastructure will provide the natural backdrop for the spectacle. The organisers also plan to demonstrate a vessel passing through the lock, allowing visitors to see the historic hydraulic engineering structures operating in their authentic setting.

Water as a meeting place

The programme extends far beyond the historical re-enactment. Visitors will be able to enjoy a cruise on an Ostróda-Elbląg Navigation vessel, a competition for the most impressive period costume, family activities, raft races, concerts and artistic performances. Local products, handicrafts and the region’s tourism offer will also be presented. The programme has been designed for both local residents and tourists visiting Warmia and Masuria during the summer season.

Joint promotion of the entire waterway

The organisers emphasise that the Elbląg Canal Birthday celebrations are far more than a local event. Local governments, institutions and partners from along the entire Elbląg Canal route have been invited to participate, including members of the Association of Municipalities and Counties of the Elbląg Canal and the Iława Lake District.

This approach is intended to strengthen the region’s shared tourism brand. The Elbląg Canal does not end at the boundaries of a single municipality. It forms a system linking lakes, canals, locks, inclined planes and ports across several local government areas. Promoting the event as part of a broader tourism offer is intended to encourage visitors to explore the entire waterway, extend their stay in the region and increase interest in local tourism services.

A heritage that builds the future

At a time of growing interest in cultural and industrial tourism, places where history remains an integral part of the contemporary landscape are becoming increasingly important. The Elbląg Canal is one of the few examples of such heritage, a structure that continues to fulfil the purpose for which it was originally built.

The Elbląg Canal Birthday celebrations serve as a reminder that protecting hydraulic engineering heritage is about more than conservation alone. Equally important is raising public awareness and demonstrating that water infrastructure can become a catalyst for tourism, education and local economic development. That is why the event combines historical re-enactment with the promotion of the region’s contemporary attractions and the active involvement of local residents.

On 25 July, Miłomłyn will once again become a place where history meets water, showing that despite its 182 years, the Elbląg Canal remains a living part of the landscape of Warmia and Masuria and one of the most valuable symbols of Polish hydraulic engineering.
