On May 29-30, 2024. The scientific conference “Towards a water resilient Europe” will be held in Brussels as part of the celebration of EU Green Week 2024, one of the most important events organized by the European Commission to raise awareness of environmental issues. Willingness to participate in the event will be available in April through the EU Green Week website.
EU Green Week 2024
This year’s EU Green Week 2024 and the conference organized as part of its celebration will address issues related to increasing the EU’s water resilience, particularly in the face of recurring crises resulting from water excess or scarcity. In view of the fact that water is a resource to be passed on from generation to generation, as well as one of the basic elements of human life, the environment and a fair, sustainable and resilient economy, the European Commission, through the theme of this year’s EU Green Week, wants to highlight the importance of water in a special way.
In recent years, citizens of European countries have faced a surge of natural disasters, such as droughts and floods, which have further underscored the challenges the EU faces with regard to water and raised awareness about the need for Europe to be more resilient to extreme events. The European Commission, in its communication for EU Green Week 2024, stresses that the pressure on water resources is due not only to the effects of climate change, but primarily to decades of structural mismanagement of this valuable resource, due to pollution and ecosystem degradation. He also points out that increasing resilience to crises is not only a challenge for the EU. Worldwide, the water cycle is unsustainable, closely linked to climate change and biodiversity loss.
Europe resilient to the water crisis – supporting EC action
Topics related to water resilience are among the top priorities of the EU’s environmental agenda. According to the announcements made by Ursula von der Leyen in her 2023 State of the EU address. The European Commission in March this year. will launch an initiative to boost resilience. The activities are to include a series of steps and initiate a public debate on achieving resilience to water crises. EU Green Week 2024 is therefore part of a broader communication campaign on the topic of Union resilience. The goal is to stimulate discussion about EU water, present and future, with an emphasis on raising awareness and promoting positive collaborative solutions.
During the scientific conference “Towards a water resilient Europe,” invited speakers will discuss various aspects of integrated water management, covering topics such as fostering a smart economy, addressing the challenges of restoring and securing the disrupted water cycle, ensuring universal access to clean and affordable resources and sanitation, and international water cooperation.
