The European Commission has announced the list of cities nominated as European GreenCapital and the list of European GreenLeaf cities for 2025.
Ten cities with populations over 100,000 were nominated for the title of Green Capital. residents. This year, as many as two cities were nominated from Poland: Poznań and Rzeszów. In addition to them, the nomination went to: Brasov (Romania), Brescia (Italy), Cagliari (Italy), Graz (Austria), Guimarães (Portugal), Logroño (Spain), Novara (Italy) and Vilnius (Lithuania).
European Green Capitals – what conditions must be met
The title of Green Capital is awarded to major cities that are recognized for their sustainable development and concern for environmental quality at the local level. Candidates will be evaluated in terms of:
- air quality;
- Quality and efficiency of water use;
- Biodiversity, green areas, sustainable land use;
- waste management and the implementation of a closed-loop economy;
- noise;
- Climate change: mitigation and energy efficiency;
- Climate change: adaptation.
