The Directorate General for Economic Affairs. The Directorate General for the Environment regularly publishes information on the results of the implementation of projects carried out within the European Union on its website. In recent days there has been a publication on the impact of flood protection on improving Danube water quality.
The Danube is one of Europe’s rivers with the most complex management structure. Its basin is located in more than 10 countries. A small fragment is even found in Poland. In order to effectively protect the river as required by the Water Framework Directive, the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River ( ICPDR) oversees the coordination of activities.
Significant problems affecting the Danube River basin are both flood protection issues and nitrogen and phosphorus pollution. It is customary to analyze these issues separately, but as the results of the study show, it is from the Danube River catchment area that actions can be taken that have a positive impact on both.
Restoring natural floodplains as a method of reducing flood risk is a measure currently being implemented in the Danube River Basin. Modeling studies show that due to improvements in the so-called “new” technologies. ecosystem services, it is possible to retain up to 38,000. tons of nitrates flowing into the Black Sea through the river’s waters. This represents more than 11% of the total outflow of these compounds in the basin. Reducing nutrients in water is crucial to stop eutrophication processes, the effects of which are dangerous to both the environment and human health.
