During the symposium, held on October 19-21, 2022. at the Sun City Resort in South Africa, member states of the Southern African Development Community have adopted integrated water, energy and food (WEF) projects.
The WaterNet/WARFSA/GWP-SA symposium, called Integrated Water Resources Management for Sustainable Development in Eastern and Southern Africa, was one of the annual meetings held in this part of the world for 22 years. Their goal is to promote dialogue between policymakers, researchers, practitioners and collaborating partners to jointly identify regional problems, gaps and key issues that still need further remediation.
This year’s session focused on the implementation of the WEF Nexus, and recommended the development of clear guidelines that address gaps identified at the country level. Yes, to move the WEF Nexus conversation from theory to action.
WEF is of tremendous importance in combating problems, and in building a correct water-energy-food system. It forms the basis in the process of poverty reduction and economic development. These three systems constitute an interdependent security apparatus. Changes that may threaten one have repercussions in others, and actions taken in a selected category may have unintended consequences for others.
