Rain, City, Climate Conference – how can cities effectively manage rainwater?

Rain, City, Climate Conference

The Rain, City, Climate Conference is a response to the challenges faced by cities. These challenges stem from climate change, which directly affects the daily lives of residents. One consequence of these changes is sudden and intense rainfall, leading to dangerous local flooding and, consequently, property damage.

The role of scientists in analyzing the problem

It is essential to draw knowledge from scientists who have been studying this issue for years and are experienced specialists in climate change adaptation and the management of the valuable resource that is rainwater. The scientific panel will feature well-known researchers:

  • Prof. Dr. Eng. Paweł Licznar – creator of the Polish Atlas of Rainfall Intensity (PANDa);
  • Dr. Hab. Eng. Jadwiga Królikowska – author of the renowned textbook Rainwater;
  • Prof. Dr. Hab. Eng. Bartosz Kaźmierczak – author of many significant publications on rainwater and climate change.

Securing funding for urban protection

Another equally important topic to be addressed at the conference is securing funding to protect cities from excessive rainwater and manage it effectively. While numerous solutions can be proposed, funding must always be found. Legal experts and representatives from institutions such as:

  • Szczecin City Hall,
  • Gdańsk Water Ltd.,
  • Marshal’s Office of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship

will share their insights in this area.

An essential part of the conference will be the participation of industry representatives, who will present best practices related to the conference theme. We can also expect top industry experts to deliver highly informative presentations.

Conference goals and the importance of rainwater management

The aim of the event is to increase knowledge and awareness among students, business representatives, public institutions, and Szczecin residents regarding rainwater management. Additionally, it seeks to facilitate scientific discussion on the topics mentioned above, outlining development directions and identifying solutions with high implementation potential.

The process of rainwater management is highly complex and requires the involvement of multiple stakeholders and institutions—from setting strategic directions, preparing specific solutions, announcing tenders, designing, approving, and constructing facilities, to their operation and integration into the urban landscape. The Rain, City, Climate Conference aims to bring together all these stakeholders, providing a platform for discussion and experience exchange.

Structure of the Rain, City, Climate Conference

The conference program is divided into three panels:
a) Scientific Panel;
b) Funding and Challenges;
c) Best Practices.

The Rain, City, Climate Conference will take place on March 13 in Szczecin. More details are available on the event’s website.
