Reintroduction of beavers in England. Will the “blind date” end in success?

reintroduction of beavers

They met on the shore of a pond. Each had arrived from afar. For the first time in the wild, they approached one another shyly and cautiously, unaware of the observers lurking in the bushes. This is how the official reintroduction of beavers in England begins, aiming to restore riparian ecosystems and a severely disrupted water cycle.

Marriage of convenience or romance?

The beavers’ blind date was arranged by members of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, an organization dedicated to nature conservation and the restoration of degraded areas. Both animals came from breeding centers, one from Cheshire and the other from Dorset. They were carefully matched to ensure the widest possible genetic pool for any future offspring. Released on 9 February in the Helman Tor nature reserve, the pair of beavers has an ambitious task: to establish a new, self-sustaining population in the heart of England.

The Valentine’s meeting of the beavers was observed with great attention, and the animals did not disappoint. After a brief sniffing of one another, they swam off together into the distance, leaving the rest to the imagination of the onlookers. Time will tell whether they fulfill their mission, but scientists suggest that February is the perfect season for beaver mating, and if successful, the female may give birth to two to six kits in spring.

Reintroduction of beavers in England gains momentum

The decision to introduce captive-bred beavers into English rivers and ponds was made a year ago and aims to repopulate the waters with these river engineers after 400 years of absence. Under new regulations, the government grants individual environmental organizations licenses for the controlled reintroduction of beavers. The first four were released in March 2025 into Little Sea in Dorset.

The legalization of reintroduction efforts was preceded by analyses and pilot studies. One of them, conducted in 2020 on the River Otter in Devon, demonstrated that the presence of beavers reduced the frequency of local property flooding and had a positive impact on regional biodiversity. An increase in fish size was even recorded.

A positive inspiration for the British came from reports in the Czech Republic, where beavers saved the State Treasury 30 million koruna, approximately 1.2 million euros, by spontaneously restoring wetlands around the Klabava River. In doing so, they outpaced the planned revitalization of the region, restoring the historic river channel and building a series of ingenious dams.

The program not without challenges

As part of the February Valentine’s reintroduction of beavers in England, two additional individuals were released. Unfortunately, as representatives of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust report, obtaining a license to release four beavers took a year and cost 150,000 pounds. For smaller entities, this level of bureaucracy may prove prohibitive.

Meanwhile, even English farmers are expressing interest in beaver reintroduction, motivated by positive stories from the region. The father of success in Cornwall is considered to be Chris Jones, a cattle farmer who created an enclosed beaver habitat on his woodland pasture and was the only one in the area to enjoy tall grass during the drought period. Jones, who cannot praise enough the life-filled beaver ponds, would also like to release beavers into the wild. However, the licensing public authority, Natural England, warned him of a three-year process and significant fees.

For now, the reintroduction of beavers in England is primarily carried out by regional Wildlife Trust organizations, which plan to release another hundred individuals later this year. Government representatives openly favor larger-scale projects that guarantee effects across entire catchments and ensure adequate genetic diversity.

Fortunately for conservationists and English ecosystems, beavers are not overly picky when it comes to choosing a partner and fall in love quite easily, often at first sight, or rather… first sniff.
