The figures clearly illustrate the growth of the European river cruise market. In Germany alone, where this form of tourism is particularly popular, river cruise sales reached €6.7 billion in 2025. This represents an 8 percent increase compared to the previous year.

According to data collected from 358 vessels operating on European waterways, 1.39 million passengers took river cruises in 2024. Together, they spent a total of 10 million nights on board.

Why are river cruises in Europe becoming more popular?

Experts from industry organizations and publications (River Cruise Europe, Seatrade Cruise News) point to several reasons for the growing popularity of European river cruises. First and foremost, the range of available itineraries continues to expand, while cruise operators are investing in new, more comfortable vessels. This goes hand in hand with changing travel trends.

Many travelers are moving away from crowded, mainstream resorts and looking for more intimate travel experiences. River cruising is perceived as a peaceful and convenient way to explore destinations. Unlike traditional coach tours, there is no need to change hotels or means of transport every day. Another advantage is cost predictability, with little risk of unexpected expenses.

Where should you go on a river cruise?

In Germany, the Rhine remains the top destination for river cruises. The river is exceptional thanks to the large number of attractive tourist cities located along its banks. Cruise passengers can visit destinations including Cologne, Strasbourg, Koblenz, and Basel. The Middle Rhine Valley is also home to picturesque vineyards, castles, and the legendary Lorelei Rock.

Travelers seeking a quieter and more intimate atmosphere can choose cruises along the Moselle, Main, Saar, Neckar, or Danube. These routes provide an opportunity to discover less-visited yet equally fascinating destinations, including renowned wine regions and charming historic towns.

According to Condé Nast Traveler, the value of European river cruise sales could reach $10 billion by 2030. This would mean that industry revenues would double compared to 2024 in just six years.

However, the continued growth of the river cruise sector may be constrained by several challenges. These primarily concern infrastructure, as many waterways require modernization, but that is not the only issue. River cruise operators also often face resistance from local authorities in riverside cities that do not want large vessels disrupting their cultural landscapes.

The environmental impact of mass tourism is another important consideration. Cruise ships emit sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, and particulate matter while sailing and when docked. They are also a source of noise pollution.

Despite these challenges, the tourism industry remains optimistic. Demographic trends are also expected to support the continued growth of the river cruise sector. According to Guido Laukamp, CEO of Nicko Cruises, river cruises are particularly popular among people aged 65 and over, a demographic group whose share of the population is expected to increase.
