Stormwater Poland, a prestigious cyclical conference, is opening its doors for the seventh time to bring together experts and enthusiasts related to climate change, economic transformation and water management issues. Scheduled for September 27 – 28, 2023, it will be held in Katowice, Poland. This time it will draw on the potential of the Upper Silesian-Zagłębów Metropolitan Area, which on the map of Poland and Europe is a special place in the face of environmental challenges.
Stormwater Poland – key issues
This year’s edition, under the theme “Adaptation with Quality,” focuses attention on global climate challenges and their local reflection, as well as the quality of water management in the Vistula-Oder watershed. The WMO State of the Climate 2022 report shows that temperatures in 2022. was 1.15°C higher than the 1850 – 1900 period, and the last eight years have been ranked among the warmest on record. Europe, and Poland in particular, is one of the fastest warming regions, which has a particular impact on the hydrological cycle and the availability of water resources.
While the challenges are global, action against them must be taken at the local level. It is necessary to intensify steps to secure the future of local communities in the context of climate change. Therefore, the first day of the conference will be devoted to adapting urban drainage systems and adjusting them to new conditions. Polish cities of various sizes will present the adaptation steps they are taking and the technologies they are using as examples of success. Also discussed will be the possibilities of financing these activities from the European Union, including the FEnIKS program.
The second day of the conference will focus on rainwater and snowmelt quality and general urban water management. The situation of the Oder River, a symbol of the negative impact of climate change on the environment, underscores the urgent need to take measures to improve urban water quality. Innovative solutions for treating rainwater and snowmelt will be presented to reduce the negative effects associated with emissions from storm overflows.
Stormwater management the topic of the next Stormwater Poland conference
Topics related to the use of rainwater as an alternative method of resource management will also be addressed. Their retention can help reduce abstraction from rivers and groundwater. Stormwater Poland will also present inspiring case studies from abroad based on modern tools for forecasting water quality and algal blooms, as well as data acquired from the space domain, including remote sensing.
Stormwater Poland 2023 virtually
The day before the conference, attend the Stormwater Poland 2023 workshop, where the importance for cities of investing in stormwater infrastructure will be discussed. Experts from the Ministry of the Environment, NFOŚiGW and NCBiR will present the available funding and application criteria. Participants will also hear about innovative solutions in water management and get tips on preparing a project for funding. This is a unique opportunity to gain valuable first-hand information and dispel doubts.
A field workshop will also be held in Gliwice, during which participants will learn details of the project “Construction of an intelligent management system for the stormwater drainage network.” They will learn how Gliwice is adapting to climate change through consistent rainwater management. During their visits to various locations, they will see new stormwater tanks, hydrological and meteorological monitoring stations and electronic information boards for residents. Together with the instructor, they will take measurements and learn modern techniques for monitoring surface water parameters. The workshop will conclude with a presentation on the benefits of a comprehensive stormwater drainage system management project.
Stormwater Poland 2023 conference a way to fight for a better future
The Stormwater Poland 2023 conference is not only a place to exchange knowledge, but above all to inspire effective action on climate change adaptation and sustainable management of water resources. The goal of the event is to make a concerted effort to protect the environment in which we live in order to pass it on to future generations in the best possible condition.
