The final part of the sixth report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has been published. The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). The report, titled “Climate Change 2023: Synthesis Report” is aimed at policymakers and summarizes the analyses conducted.
The IPCC, created in 1988, conducts extensive research on climate change. The result of this work are reports based on the results of scientific observations. These are indispensable for making decisions on the direction of development. The latest document is a synthesis of earlier publications, developed as part of the Sixth Report on Climate Change.
The IPCC’s main message to politicians and policymakers is that new and accelerated initiatives that have been implemented must be taken now, because we are acting too slowly. The information in the Report is divided into 3 sections:
- current status and trends;
- Future climate change, risks and long-term response;
- AN IMMEDIATE RESPONSE.
The IPCC stresses that climate change is caused by human activity, particularly greenhouse gas emissions. The impact of the changes can be seen both in the atmosphere and in the biosphere, oceans and glaciers. Imprudent actions cause not only the threat of extreme events, but also a massive loss of biodiversity.
The Report’s authors see progress in climate change adaptation, but point to a gap in climate change adaptation efforts. They also point to insufficient funding for this type of activity. It was emphasized that in terms of mitigation, at the level of adopted policies, significant changes have been seen since the publication of the fifth Report. The problem, however, is the pace of implementation, which at current levels will not be able to stop climate warming within 1.5°C. Climate risks are now higher than those indicated in the previous IPCC Report.
Some of the negative effects of climate change cannot be avoided, we can only weaken the force of their impact. It is necessary to sharply reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The paths for reducing CO2 and other gas emissions may vary, but they require a huge effort right here and now. Implementing mitigation measures as soon as possible will more than likely protect us from cascading changes in our world. The authors point out that this is not an easy road. It is also very expensive, but the alternatives, associated with postponing action, will require even more investment. Climate change adaptation alone will not reduce risks. It must be countered, and it must be countered immediately.
The conclusions of the “Climate Change 2023: Synthesis Report” emphatically indicate the need to implement measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible. Only solidarity of effort will allow us to secure our future and that of our children.
