September 2024. European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen presented the European Parliament with a proposal for the new composition of the European Commission. Commissioners, before taking up their positions, must receive its approval. The proposal includes the appointment of six executive vice presidents, i.e. deputies to the president. Each of them, in addition to the coordinating role of vice-president, has also been given their own tasks.
The proposal also shows changes in the scope of activities of some commissioners. Water issues within the new European Commission will be handled by the Commissioner for Water. Environment, Water Scarcity Resilience and a Competitive Closed Circuit Economy – Jessica Roswall.
New European Commission
Ursula von der Leyen remains chairwoman of the new European Commission, and in introducing the composition of the new commission, she said she would be replaced by six vice-presidents. Twenty commissioners have been appointed to carry out the EC’s tasks in the coming years. In addition, the commissioner for Budget, Anti-Fraud and Public Administration, the Commissioner for Trade and Trade Commissioner. Economy will report directly to the president, rather than to her deputies as the other commissioners.
Executive Vice President of the new European Commission
- Executive Vice President for the A Clean, Fair and Competitive Transition has been proposed for Teresa Ribera of Spain. She is also to be responsible for competition policy and the implementation of the European Green Deal.
- The executive vice president for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen of Finland has been proposed. She is also to be responsible for the area related to digital and border technologies.
- The executive vice president for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy, Stéphane Séjourné of France has been proposed. He is also to be responsible for industry, SMEs and the single market.
- The executive vice president for Human Resources, Skills and Readiness, Roxana Mînzatu of Romania has been proposed. She is also to be responsible for education and culture, quality jobs and social rights.
- Executive Vice President for Cohesion and Reform. Raffaele Fitto of Italy has been proposed for cohesion and reform. He is also to be responsible for cohesion policy, regional development and cities.
- Executive Vice President for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Foreign Affairs and Security Policy was proposed to Kaja Kallas of Estonia.

Twenty commissioners will coordinate tasks within the new European Commission:
