The colorful waters in the fascinating world of natural phenomena are one of the most stunning phenomena, from the red lagoon of Bolivia to the turquoise volcanic lakes of Indonesia. These remarkable places not only attract with their beauty, but also present the complexity of natural processes. Each of them, with their unique colors, is a testimony to the dynamics of our planet, showing the diversity and beauty of natural processes. In these unique places, water, the essence of life, reveals a different and surprising side, inspiring tourists and scientists alike. In this article, we will take a look at seven of the most exceptional examples. The colored waters have gained popularity around the world. We will present them, highlighting not only their unusual colors, but also the distinctive features behind their appearance.

This remarkable lake covers an area of about 6,000. ha and is characterized by a depth of no more than 80 cm. The most distinguishing feature of the Colorada Lagoon, however, is its intense reddish-orange color, a result of the presence of sediments of this color and the pigmentation of some algae. The colorful waters of our globe – the Dead Sea

The Dead Sea, located on the border between Jordan and Israel, is one of the most unique bodies of water in the world. It is primarily known for its remarkable transparency. But what makes it so special is its high concentration of salt and minerals. These ingredients give the water its characteristic glossy, almost mirror-like appearance. The result is that the water looks like it is adorned with precious stones. The landscape surrounding the Dead Sea is equally fascinating. The shores of the lake are covered with white mineral and salt deposits that give the place a unique charm. These white, almost surreal deposits are a stark contrast to the clear waters of the Dead Sea, and together they create an extremely picturesque and almost unreal sight.

Colorful waters of our globe – Rio Tinto

The Rio Tinto in Spain is one of the most remarkable rivers in the world. It is known for its intense red color, which resembles blood. This unique shade is the result of the high concentration of iron dissolved in the water. The element comes from natural geological processes, but also from the impact of mining activities that have been carried out in the region for centuries.

The color of the water in Rio Tinto is so intense that the river is often compared to flowing blood, giving it a mysterious and somewhat mystical character. In addition, the acidic pH of the water and the abundance of other minerals create unique environmental conditions that are categorized as rare. Rio Tinto attracts not only tourists with its unusual appearance, but also scientists who study its unique ecology and the microorganisms adapted to live in such extreme conditions.

Colorful waters of our globe – Kelimutu crater lakes

The Kelimutu volcano, located on the Indonesian island of Flores, rises 1,639 meters above sea level. It is on it that three crater lakes are located, each with a different color. The first of these, Tiwu Ata Bupu, known as the Old People’s Lake, is usually blue in color. The second, Tiwu Ko’o Fai Nuwa Muri, or Lake of Young Men and Virgins, presents itself in shades of green. The third, Tiwu Ata Polo, known as the Enchanted Lake, measures red. The colors of the water in Kelimutu’s lakes are the result of complex chemical and geological processes, including changes in mineral composition, the influence of the seasons and day, precipitation and volcanic gas emissions.

Although the color changes of Kelimut’s lakes are partially explained by scientists, there are also elements of the phenomenon that still remain a mystery. Geologists are still studying why the colored waters of the lakes show such unpredictability, going from shades of blue, through green and black, to brown, white or red. This uncertainty adds charm and mystery to Kelimutu’s crater lakes.

Chott el Djerid is a vast salt lake located in the Tunisian part of the Sahara, which is characterized by a seasonal cycle of drying out. Most of the year the land depression remains dry, but during the rainy seasons it fills with water, creating a phenomenal landscape. The water in the lake changes its colors from light green to delicate shades of pink to vibrant orange. These changes are the result of unique chemical and mineral processes, which mainly involve reactions associated with high concentrations of salts and various minerals, such as sulfates and chlorides. The lake water can turn pink or orange due to the presence of specific microorganisms and algae that produce natural pigments. These microorganisms thrive due to the unique mineral composition and saltiness of the water. Also, changing environmental conditions, such as temperature, sunlight and evaporation, contribute to changes in the color of the water in this salt lake.
