In response to the devastating floods and significant damage in southern Poland, the Polish Humanitarian Action (PAH) is providing immediate essential aid and supporting residents affected by the disaster. This marks another occasion where the organization has stepped in to assist flood victims in Poland.
PAH is appealing for financial support and solidarity with those whose homes and properties have been damaged by the catastrophe. Water Issues stands in support and, as always, encourages everyone to contribute by sharing reliable information on how to help and ways to donate.
Dramatic situation in southern Poland
The situation in southern Poland is dire, particularly in the Lower Silesian, Opole, and Silesian provinces. Collapsed bridges, damaged or overwhelmed dams, and massive amounts of rainwater have caused unimaginable destruction in many towns, and the weather remains unstable. More rainfall and rising river levels are expected due to severe downpours in the Czech Republic.
“The photos and footage we are receiving from Głuchołazy, Kłodzko, Bystrzyca Kłodzka, and Lądek-Zdrój are truly catastrophic,” says Helena Krajewska, PAH spokesperson. “Now is the time to come together and help those most affected by this disaster, just like in 1997.”
PAH will allocate half a million zlotys
The Polish Humanitarian Action has allocated PLN 500,000 to cover the most urgent needs. The foundation is in contact with local authorities and other organizations on the ground to address current requirements and to ensure those returning to devastated homes are not left without assistance.
“People often overlook that the tragedy for residents doesn’t end when the water level recedes,” says Maciej Bagiński, president of PAH. “They will need cleaning supplies, basic household items, and financial help. We will not abandon the victims.”
PAH has risen to the occasion many times before, providing immediate aid and support to flood victims in Poland. In 1997, during the “Millennium Flood,” they distributed blankets, sleeping bags, medicines, and food, and later helped repair damage and renovate destroyed buildings, including schools, orphanages, and local community centers. After subsequent floods in 2001 and 2010, PAH supplied essential products and helped residents clean and repair their homes and institutions.
The situation is highly dynamic, and needs may evolve over time. Therefore, PAH will keep the public informed of their actions. The organization also calls on companies to offer in-kind or financial support.
