The European Commission’s proposed amendments to the EU Waste Framework Directive – COM(2023) 420 final – indicate, among other things. Targets for reducing food waste by 2030. AND APPLY:
- reducing waste by 10% for food production and processing;
- reducing waste by 30% for households.
Let’s remember that by reducing food waste, we save our planet’s water resources.
Programs to lead to reduction of food waste
Member states will be required to implement programs designed to lead to the reduction of food waste and include the following activities:
- Behavior change campaigns;
- Actions to address supply chain inefficiencies;
- food donation systems;
- skills training;
- Funding.
Take part in the ongoing public consultation
The proposed amendments to the Waste Framework Directive are currently in the public consultation stage.
The planned closing date for consultations on programs leading to minimization of food waste is September 29, 2023.
According to the European Commission’s website, all comments/information/observations/proposals received will be summarized by the European Commission and presented to the European Parliament and Council for inclusion in the legislative debate.
