Yanjin is a city located in China. It is known for one very distinctive feature – its narrow width. It is probably the narrowest city in the world. In some places it measures just 30 meters. Yanjin is also a unique place because of its location, which includes a river flowing through the middle, steep mountains bounding it from the outside and one main road on each bank.
Location of Yanjin
Yanjin is located in southern China’s Yunnan Province, about 200 kilometers southwest of Kunming. The city is located along the Nanxi River, which is one of the main tributaries of the Yangtze River.
Why is Yanjin considered the world’s narrowest city?
The township is only 30 meters wide at its narrowest point and just over 300 meters at its widest. Although Yanjin extends for several kilometers along the river, there are few bridges connecting the two banks, and this negatively affects the city’s economic development opportunities.
Both the mountains and Nanxi are a major constraint on Yanjin’s spatial expansion. Residents strive to develop every available space, which is why many homes have been built right on the riverbank. The buildings are set on stilts to protect them from flooding when water levels rise due to floods.
