In areas where water supply infrastructure is limited, wells and intakes are becoming an indispensable source of drinking water for local communities. These are not just rural areas, where water supply networks may be scarcer, but also places not too far from large agglomerations. For these areas, groundwater is not only a guarantee of access to an essential resource, but also a key factor affecting quality of life and public health.

Irrigation of agricultural fields

Groundwater plays a key role in agriculture, where it is indispensable for irrigating agricultural fields. This becomes especially important in areas of low precipitation, where natural water supplies may be insufficient to maintain agricultural productivity. Systems using groundwater for irrigation allow for flexible and efficient management of resources, which has a direct impact on global food security.

Water storage and ecosystem regulation

During heavy precipitation, water is stored in underground layers, acting as natural storage. This collection and storage is particularly important, as it enables a stable water supply to be maintained even during periods of drought. This maintains the balance of aquatic ecosystems, and also works as a natural regulator, counteracting extreme changes in water levels and ensuring the sustainable functioning of river and lake ecosystems. This phenomenon can lead to a number of negative consequences, such as the disappearance of springs, reduced well productivity and desertification of rural areas.

Another problem is pollution from industry, agriculture and households, which can seep into underground layers, threatening water quality. Therefore, protecting these resources requires not only limiting exploitation, but also effective measures to control pollution.

Individual actions, though seemingly small, combined have a powerful force and contribute to the protection of this priceless resource.
