“By various names I have only glorified you, rivers! You are both honey and love and death and dance,” Czeslaw Milosz wrote in one of his poems. For many generations, rivers have functioned with their own natural rhythm – rising, overflowing, providing shelter and a source of life for countless species of plants and animals, being refuges of biodiversity. Unfortunately, the mishandling of water and the taking of rivers’ land has also made them a danger to people in case of floods, and their riverbeds often dry up or disappear altogether. Sustainable water management should be a priority. Our awareness of river protection should continue to grow.
Why the competition?
The contest aims to draw the attention of all of us to the problems of river pollution, improper use of land along watercourses, and unjustified development of river valleys in Poland. With images in the form of photos or drawings, we want to show how much can be lost, but also how many sections of rivers unaltered by human pressure can still be protected.
We announced the 1st edition of the Competition in two categories:
- Photography – a contest aimed at all adults,
- Drawing – competition aimed at elementary school students (grades 4-6).
To participate in the contest, you must present in an appropriate form (photo/drawing) natural sections of Polish rivers, riparian areas, wetlands that naturally retain water.
Submissions should be sent by May 12 this year. via an online form available on the Competition website. The settlement is scheduled for May 26, 2023.
